The Technology and Security Film Club

The Technology and Security Film Club is a group of women scholars and practitioners who care about technology and its impact on society. While there are many ways to explore this immense topic, we chose film as our focal point. 🎬

Technology has long captured the imagination of filmmakers. Likewise, storytelling shapes people's beliefs about technology, influences its development, and affects how we interact with it. The Film Club aims to examine this relationship between technology and storytelling (with a thematic focus on security, defined in the broadest sense possible), asking questions that aren’t typically explored in purely academic settings. How are myths about technology being perpetuated in films? Whose interests do these storylines serve? What do movies absolutely get wrong about technology? Do we need another close-up shot of computer code running in the background to reinforce the protagonist's hacker credentials?

The Film Club is co-organized by CSINT’s Executive Director, Samantha Bradshaw, and non-resident fellow, Gabrielle Lim, and meets every two months to discuss a film. Whenever possible, we also try to arrange in-person meetups and screenings. If you are interested in joining, please reach out to us.
